I sometimes see commercials for Heifer International when I watch TV shows online, so when I saw another ad today, I decided to find out more about the company.
Rather than providing food directly to people around the world, the organization gives them livestock, seeds and trees. It also teaches them how to take care of the animals and grow food for their family and village, empowering them to become self-reliant. Most people then pass on the offspring and the new seeds to other families, so they can start their own agricultural business too. This looks like that Chinese proverb really does work, except that you give him cattle instead of fish!
“Give a man a cow and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to milk a cow and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Heifer International has enrolled Food Network’s Alton Brown (who doesn’t like that guy?) to explain the principle behind the charity. Did you know that Alton had a goat, a Heifer cow and a water buffalo? Well, you’ll have to see it for yourself in this video from YouTube. Very cute, and very smart.
Kudos to Heifer International for using cows to pass on the gift of life and self-reliance!
