I want to give my son full
responsibility credit for today’s cow encounter. This afternoon I asked him to grab a couple of books to read before naptime. He made his selection from our shelf of French children’s literature and the first book he picked was this one:
A cow named Mimosa goes through quite a life-changing transformation in this story. As the other farm animals keep making fun of her (yes, even the pig laughs at her, how shameful!), she can’t help but cry her eyes out, attracting the attention of a fairy named Coquillette:
Have you ever seen a sadder cow, drowning herself in a puddle of tears? After finding what had to be the happiest cow on earth the other day, this is quite the opposite!
Fairy Coquillette gives Mimosa the opportunity to become whatever she wants, and she requests to be turned into a witch so that she can torture the other animals. Well, if you know anything about cows, you can guess Mimosa can’t find enough nasty attitude within her to complete her transformation. Instead the fairy helps her become the Fairy Mimosa, maker of cakes and pastries:
Wow, a cow that makes not only yummy milk, but also the chocolate chip cookies to go with it? Where do I sign up?
