The cows of Julian, California – Part 1

A couple of weeks ago, a good friend of mine and I drove up to the local mountains east of San Diego towards the popular town of Julian. Our goal was to pick some apples in an organic orchard. Even though the kids managed to snack on a few apples as we were picking them and filling our bags, they got hungry pretty fast, so after we were done, we headed to town for lunch.

It was just past noon and most of the restaurants in town were pretty full already. So we took a side street and ended up in front of the Rong Branch Restaurant in the heart of Julian. Here’s the front of their menu. Can you guess what type of food they serve?

If you said beef, you’re probably right, but they actually sell everything and anything. By the quality of the food we ordered, I want to bet nothing on the menu tastes great. And the service was even worse than the food. We literally had to get up to catch our server and bring her to the table a few times.  So my recommendation if you ever visit Julian, California, is to eat anywhere but there. I guess we should have seen it coming with a name like “rong ranch”, clearly omitting the w from rong…

At least the place was entertaining because I spotted quite a few cows. Besides the cow skull on the menu, there was one on the BBQ sauce bottle at the table.

And it was hard to miss these giant longhorns on the wall above us. My friend’s two-year-old boy kept pointing at them, clearly admiring the display. Or maybe he was just wondering what the heck they were.

I’ll stop this post here but believe or not, this was not the end of my cow sightings for the day. Stay tuned for the next post and you’ll see I actually saw REAL cows that day!
