Sandra Boynton wants to know if you’re a cow

Sandra Boynton is a talented children’s book author and illustrator with a great sense of humor. Last year, I was very excited to see her come out with a big book solely dedicated to cows called Amazing Cows: Udder Absurdity for Children. And yes, the content is quite absurd and very funny. I’ve even featured some of it on this blog (just search for “amazing cows”).

I know she’s written books about many animals before, including a lot of barnyard animals, and of course cows. My kids are too big for her books now but I still enjoy reading them for myself. Hey, girls just want to have fun once in a while.

When I went to my local Target yesterday, I discovered they have a pretty good selection of Sandra Boynton books right now, with, drumroll, please … lots of cows. Check out the cow and pig dancing together on the cover of Barnyard Dance. And of course the classic Moo, Baa, La La La! There are pigs on the front cover, they’re just hidden.

And then I spotted this Sandra Boynton book called Are You A Cow? and I couldn’t remember seeing it before. That’s because it’s brand new! It just came out in May 2012, NOW!

You’ve got to love the cover of the book because this cow looks quite puzzled when asked the question, are you a cow? Will someone please reassure her and tell her she’s a cow. And quite a cute one, I should add.

By the way, I was browsing the children’s books department to find some Star Wars books for early readers, which my five-year old recently requested. Well, I found NOTHING! But resourceful is my middle name and fortunately I ordered some last week from the library, just in case my store search would be in vain. Lucky us, we already got a few to read. I can’t believe the kid is so much into Star Wars already when he hasn’t seen any of the movies yet!

It’s cows galore at Barnes & Noble

After a few exciting mornings this week, we decided to take it easy today, starting with running a few errands at Target to purchase the final necessary items for my son’s first day at kindergarten next week. Then I thought it’d be a great idea to head to the children’s book department at Barnes & Noble. The kids spent time playing with the Thomas the Train table and discovering new books they grabbed off the shelves.

That’s how we found out Judy Schachner just came out with a new Skippyjon Jones book (Skippyjon Jones Class action) and I browsed the whole department taking photos of interesting books I’ll request from our library at some point.

As soon as we walked into the children’s book department, this is what I saw on one of the toy shelves, usually displaying characters from famous books:

Sandra Boynton rules! She now sells plush cows, plush pigs and plush chickens from her funny books and these look surprisingly close to her illustrations. She always manages to draw animals who look seem to be in a complete state of wonder, or as I like to call it, cluelessness.

As I was perusing the department for new book ideas to later borrow at the library, I somehow managed to spot a lot more cows than I ever thought possible for one morning. Of course, it wouldn’t be fair of me to just talk about it, so here are my findings.

There you have it, today’s theme is… the farm! Wait, I thought we went to Barnes & Noble? Wow, books really do take you places.

It’s another knock-knock cow joke!

Let’s have a little dose of humor for this Monday. Below is my kids’ favorite knock-knock joke. I hear it every day, several times a day and they can’t seem to get enough of it (but I have!). It is pretty cute so I thought I would share it with you. It’s from Sandra Boynton’s book called  Amazing Cows: Udder Absurdity for Children. Enjoy!

It’s a cow themed knock-knock joke

A few months ago I spotted Sandra Boynton’s new Amazing Cows: : Udder Absurdity for Children book at Barnes & Noble. As I was ordering some books on Amazon last week, I couldn’t resist adding this book to my shopping cart and it arrived at our house yesterday. Since last night, my kids and I have been looking at the various stories and jokes in the book, and there are a lot of them.

This is one of the jokes we read this afternoon before nap, and it happens to be my first cow themed knock-knock joke:

My kids were desperately in need of new knock-knock jokes because our patience has run out with the banana / orange one, so I’m glad this book contains new ones. You can bet you’ll see more of Boynton’s amazing cows in the future!
